Lil Bub: The Special-Needs Cat Who Became the Internet's Most Loved Celebrity Pet
Some cats become famous because they appear in films. Others are remembered because they helped people, travelled the world, or became symbols of courage. Lil BUB became famous for simply being herself.
With her wide green eyes, short legs, tiny body, extra toes, and tongue that always peeked out, she looked unlike any other cat on the internet. But Lil BUB’s story was about much more than an unusual appearance. She was a rescued special-needs cat who lived a joyful life, inspired millions of people, supported animal charities, and helped scientists learn more about rare genetic conditions.
Among modern celebrity pets, Lil BUB remains one of the most unforgettable. Her life also deserves a place among the most heartwarming stories about famous animals in history.
A Tiny Kitten Who Needed Extra Care
Lil BUB was born on 21 June 2011 in Bloomington, Indiana. She was the runt of a litter born to a feral mother, and it was clear from the beginning that she was different from her siblings.
She was born with several genetic mutations and needed to be bottle-fed. Because of her unusual shape and special care needs, finding an adoptive home was not easy. She had an extreme form of feline dwarfism, which left her legs and lower jaw much smaller than the rest of her body.
Her owner, Mike Bridavsky, did not originally plan to become the famous cat’s person. Friends asked him to give the little kitten a home, and when he first greeted her, he said, “Hey, Bub!” The name stayed.
At full size, Lil BUB weighed about 3.9 pounds, or 1.8 kilograms. She remained remarkably small, with a kitten-like appearance throughout her life.

What Made Lil BUB Look So Unique?
Lil BUB’s appearance came from a combination of unusual physical traits.
Her lower jaw was permanently underdeveloped. Because it was so much shorter than her upper jaw, she could not keep her tongue inside her mouth. This gave her the famous expression that people around the world came to recognize.
She was also polydactyl, meaning she had extra toes. Polydactyl cats are not as rare as many people think, and the trait occurs naturally in cats. It has been especially associated with some cat populations in New England, where these cats are sometimes called “Hemingway cats” because of their connection with Ernest Hemingway’s home in Key West.
Lil BUB also had very short legs and an unusually shaped body. These features restricted her movement, especially as she grew older. Even so, she developed her own way of getting around. Mike described her as “a fantastic waddler.”
That phrase captures something important about Lil BUB. She was not defined only by what she could not do. She found her own way to move, explore, travel, and enjoy life.
The Bone Condition That Changed Her Care
In late 2012, while filming her documentary, Lil BUB experienced a serious health episode. A specialist later diagnosed her with osteopetrosis, an exceptionally rare bone disorder.
Osteopetrosis causes bones to become abnormally dense. Although that may sound like stronger bones, the condition can make bones less healthy and can interfere with movement. In Lil BUB’s case, her short legs and osteopetrosis made walking increasingly difficult.
Her care required patience, veterinary attention, and creative thinking. Mike and Lil BUB’s supporters searched for ways to improve her comfort and mobility. She eventually received treatment that helped her move more easily, and she continued to enjoy travelling and spending time with people.
Her health challenges never erased her personality. Lil BUB was often described as calm, curious, and comfortable around people. She travelled with Mike in cars, planes, and public places, becoming an unusually relaxed ambassador for animals who need extra care.
From Bloomington Photos to Internet Fame
Lil BUB’s first photographs were posted to Tumblr in November 2011. They quickly attracted attention because people had never seen quite such a distinctive-looking cat.
Her popularity grew dramatically after she was featured on Reddit. Soon, her pictures were appearing across social media. Her Facebook page eventually collected well over three million likes, and she became one of the first truly global internet-famous cats.
The timing mattered. The early 2010s were a special period for online animal culture. People were beginning to share photos and videos of pets on a massive scale, and unusual animals could become famous without appearing in a traditional television commercial or movie.
Lil BUB stood out from the crowd because her appeal was immediate. People noticed her tongue and her big eyes first, but they stayed because she seemed gentle, happy, and completely herself.
A Cat With Her Own Film, Book, Show, and Album
Lil BUB’s growing audience led to an extraordinary collection of creative projects.
Her documentary, Lil Bub & Friendz, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on 18 April 2013. The film explored internet cats, online fame, and the people who cared for these unusual animals. It won the Tribeca Online Festival Best Feature Film award.
She also appeared on major television programs, including Good Morning America, Today, and The View. In September 2013, she became the star of her own web series, Lil BUB’s Big SHOW. Her first guest was Whoopi Goldberg.
That same year, Lil Bub’s Lil Book: The Extraordinary Life of the Most Amazing Cat on the Planet was published. The title was playful, but the affection behind it was real. Lil BUB had become a source of comfort for people who felt different themselves.
In 2015, she released Science & Magic, an album built around electronic music and recordings of her vocalisations. She even made a cameo in the 2016 film Nine Lives.
A visual history, Lil BUB: The Earth Years, was released in 2021, allowing fans to revisit her life through photographs and memories.
The “LilBubome” and an Amazing Scientific Discovery
One of the most fascinating parts of Lil BUB’s story is that her fame helped support real scientific research.
Fans helped fund the “LilBubome,” a crowdfunded project to sequence her genome. The project reached its funding goal on 25 May 2015.
Researchers found a mutation in the RANK/TNFRSF11A gene. The same gene had also been found in one mouse and fifteen humans. The finding helped scientists better understand the genetic basis of Lil BUB’s osteopetrosis and showed how one unusual animal could contribute to research into rare conditions.

Here are a few more amazing animal facts connected to Lil BUB:
A cat’s tongue is covered in tiny, hook-shaped structures called papillae. These help cats groom their fur and scrape meat from bones.
When a cat cannot fully retract its tongue, those papillae help create the familiar “blep” look.
Feline dwarfism can result from genetic changes that affect bone and cartilage development.
Polydactyly is a naturally occurring inherited trait, not an injury or illness.
Lil BUB’s genome study was a reminder that unusual animals are not curiosities without value. They can teach us about biology, genetics, and the many ways bodies develop.
Turning Fame Into Help for Other Animals
Lil BUB’s success was used to support animals who were often overlooked.
Mike sold merchandise under the LIL BUB name and donated much of the profit to animal rescue groups. He also arranged meet-and-greets at shelters around the United States. These events helped shelters receive donations, a share of merchandise sales, and attention from people who might not otherwise have visited.
Lil BUB fronted a PETA spay-and-neuter campaign in 2013. She also helped create Lil BUB’s Big Fund with the ASPCA, which supported special-needs pets and the shelters caring for them.
Different reports have cited different fundraising totals at different points. The safest summary is that Lil BUB helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for animals in need, while later official descriptions reported more than $1 million raised. Her legacy charity, Lil BUB’s Big Fund, continues to support special-needs companion animals, shelters, foster programs, and education.

Lil BUB’s Final Chapter and Lasting Legacy
Lil BUB died in her sleep in Bloomington on 1 December 2019. She was eight years old and had been fighting an aggressive bone infection, or osteomyelitis.
Her death was reported by major newspapers, including The New York Times. Fans mourned her not only because she was famous, but because she had made people feel understood.
Lil BUB showed that a disability does not prevent an animal from having a rich, happy life. She showed that a special-needs pet can be loved for who they are rather than judged by what they look like or what they cannot do.
She also encouraged people to adopt animals who might need extra patience, medical care, or a different kind of home. That may be her most important achievement.
Lil BUB was tiny, but her influence was enormous. She helped bring attention to rescued animals, special-needs pets, genetic research, and the powerful bond between animals and people.
For many fans, she will always be more than an internet celebrity. She was a little cat from Indiana who made the world kinder, one wide-eyed photograph at a time.
