Félicette: The Stray Cat Who Became the First Cat in Space
On October 18, 1963, a small black-and-white cat climbed into a rocket in the Sahara Desert and made history.
Her name was Félicette. She had once been a stray cat on the streets of Paris. Just a few years later, she became the first cat to travel into space: and the first and only cat to survive a spaceflight and return safely to Earth.
Félicette’s story is one of the most amazing animal facts in the history of space exploration. It is also a story filled with courage, scientific curiosity, and a bittersweet ending.
From Parisian stray to space candidate
Before she became famous, Félicette was simply a stray cat living in Paris. She had no famous owner, no special pedigree, and no idea that her life was about to change.
French scientists were looking for animals that could help them understand how living bodies responded to spaceflight. France had already sent rats into space, but researchers wanted to study a larger mammal. Cats were considered useful because scientists already understood a great deal about their neurological systems.
Félicette was picked up and brought into the French research program at the Centre d’Enseignement et de Recherches de Médecine Aéronautique, known as CERMA. She was one of a group of female cats selected for their calm temperaments and suitable size.
The animals were not given names at first. Instead, they were identified by numbers. This was meant to help the scientists remain emotionally detached during the experiments.
Félicette’s official designation was C 341.
That number would appear in technical records, but it would not be the name remembered by the world.
Training for a dangerous journey
Space travel in the early 1960s was still new and risky. Scientists did not know exactly how weightlessness, acceleration, vibration, and confinement would affect the human body. Animals were used in several countries to gather information before sending people on more ambitious missions.
At CERMA, Félicette and the other cats went through demanding training.
They were placed in small containers for long periods to imitate the tight space inside a rocket capsule. They experienced loud rocket sounds and restraint equipment. They were also spun in a centrifuge, which simulated the strong forces of launch and the intense acceleration experienced during descent.
The centrifuge training was especially important. During a rocket launch, the body can feel several times heavier than normal. The cats had to show that they could tolerate these forces without suffering a dangerous reaction.
Félicette also had electrodes surgically implanted in her skull. These electrodes allowed researchers to monitor electrical activity in her brain during the mission. Additional sensors helped record her heart rate, breathing, and other physical responses.
The process was difficult by today’s standards, and it is important to remember that Félicette did not volunteer for the mission. Early space programs often involved animal experiments that would be viewed with much greater concern today.
Still, within the program, Félicette proved to be calm and steady. Her temperament and small size made her a strong candidate for the flight.
Launch day in the Algerian Sahara
On the morning of October 18, 1963, C 341 was placed inside the nose cone of a French Véronique AGI sounding rocket. The rocket launched from Hammaguir, a French facility in the Sahara Desert in Algeria.
At around 8:09 a.m., the rocket roared away from the ground.
The launch pushed Félicette through forces of approximately 9.5 times normal gravity. The rocket climbed rapidly, carrying her far above the Earth. The mission was suborbital, which means the rocket reached space but did not enter orbit around the planet.
The capsule reached an altitude of about 157 kilometres, or roughly 97 miles. Félicette experienced approximately five minutes of weightlessness during the flight.
The entire journey lasted around 13 minutes, although some reports describe the mission as lasting closer to 15 minutes depending on how the flight phases were counted.
For those few minutes, Félicette was the only cat in the universe known to be above the Earth.
Scientists received data from the electrodes and sensors as the rocket rose, reached the top of its path, and began its return. The information helped them study how a mammal’s brain and body reacted to acceleration, weightlessness, and the stressful trip back through the atmosphere.
Then came the most important part: getting home.
The capsule separated from the rocket and began its descent beneath a parachute. It landed safely in the desert, and Félicette was recovered alive.
She had survived spaceflight.
How C 341 became Félicette
When news of the mission reached newspapers and radio stations, the media gave the cat a name: Felix.
The name came from Felix the Cat, the cartoon character known around the world. But there was one problem. C 341 was female.
Once CERMA confirmed her sex, the name was changed to the feminine French form: Félicette.
That name suited her far better. It transformed an impersonal code into the identity of a real animal with a remarkable story.
Unfortunately, some later commemorative stamps continued to call her Felix. For many years, this mistake helped blur her place in history. Even though Félicette had completed a unique mission, she was often overshadowed by better-known space animals such as Laika the dog and Ham the chimpanzee.
A bittersweet ending
Félicette’s return to Earth was a success, but her life did not continue as a happy celebrity story.
About two months after the flight, she was euthanized so researchers could examine her brain. They wanted to compare the physical condition of her brain with the electrical recordings collected during the mission.
This is the hardest part of Félicette’s story to tell. She survived the launch, weightlessness, re-entry, and parachute landing, only to be used in another scientific procedure afterward.
Accounts differ on how much useful information the examination produced. The mission did show that brain activity could be monitored remotely during spaceflight, but the later examination did not provide the clear scientific breakthrough researchers had hoped for.
Félicette was not given the long life or public recognition that many people now feel she deserved. She died in 1963, shortly after becoming one of the most important animals in space history.
Why Félicette matters
Félicette matters because her story makes space history personal.
It is easy to remember rockets as machines, missions as numbers, and the space race as a contest between nations. But inside that rocket was a living, feeling animal: a small stray cat who had gone from Paris streets to the edge of space.
Her story also reminds us that scientific progress has a human and ethical cost. The early space age depended on animals because scientists did not yet know how the body would respond to space. Today, her mission is remembered alongside important questions about animal welfare, informed consent, and the responsibility humans have toward animals used in research.
That complexity is part of her legacy. We can recognize the importance of her mission while also feeling sadness about what she endured.
Félicette is now counted among the famous animals in history, alongside animals such as Laika, Ham, Dolly the sheep, and the many working animals that changed human lives. But she holds a unique record: she was the first cat in space and the only cat known to have survived the journey.
She was also a celebrity in the truest sense: not because she belonged to a famous person, as many celebrity pets do, but because her own extraordinary journey made her famous.
The statue that finally brought her home
For decades, Félicette had no proper memorial. That changed when space enthusiast Matthew Serge Guy launched a Kickstarter campaign in 2017.
More than 1,100 supporters helped raise over $57,000 to create a bronze statue in her honor. Sculptor Gill Parker designed the memorial, which shows Félicette perched on top of Earth and looking toward the sky.
The statue was unveiled in December 2019 at the International Space University near Strasbourg, France. It stands as a tribute to Félicette’s place in space exploration and to the public’s decision that her story should not be forgotten.
The memorial is especially meaningful because Félicette’s first public identity was just a number, and even her name was initially recorded incorrectly. The statue gives her back something she was denied during her lifetime: a lasting, recognizable identity.
Remembering the Astrocat
Félicette’s spaceflight lasted only a few minutes, but those minutes lasted forever in history.
She was a stray from Paris, a research subject known as C 341, a female cat mistakenly called Felix, and finally Félicette: the Astrocat. Her mission helped France take part in the early exploration of space, and her survival made her unique among feline space travelers.
